The Tomb of Sand, a translated Hindi novel by Geetanjali Shree, is on the International Booker Prize long list for 2022. The judges described the plot as “loud and gripping.” The book will compete for a GBP 50,000 prize, which will be split evenly between the author and translator.
Meanwhile, in 2022, chosen authors and translators will get GBP 2,500 each, up from GBP 1,000 in previous years, bringing the prize’s total value to GBP 80,000.
The shortlist for the award in 2022 will be unveiled on April 7 during the London Book Fair, and the winner will be announced on May 26 at a ceremony in London.
In Tomb of Sand, the tale of an 80-year-old lady who is despondent following her husband’s death is told. The judges said of the Hindi novel,

Geetanjali Shree’s inventive, lively ‘Tomb of Sand,’ with its constantly shifting viewpoints and times, brings us into every crevice of an 80-year-old woman’s lifes and extraordinary pasts,” the judges said of the novels.
Daisy Rockwell’s vivacious translation matches the text’s complexity, which is full of word play and vitality.

They called its a raucous and engrossing books.

The company is based in New Delhi. Shree is the author of three novels and several short story collections, and her work has been translated into English, French, German, Serbian, and Korean. She was born in the Uttar Pradesh town of Mainpuri.

Shree, 64, is a theater artist who has received and been nominated for several awards and scholarships. “Tomb of Sand” is one of the earliest books to be published in the United Kingdom.
He went on to say that having Rockwell translate the work into English was an honor.

The works form a contentious longlist that spans the intimate to the epic, the numinous to the profane, and traces a ring around the globe. According to Wynne, the first translator to chair the Booker judging panel, these 13 works from 12 countries and 11 languages “explore the diversity and complexity of human experience.

Every year, the award is granted to a single book that has been translated into English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland, and it is a companion to the Booker Prize for Fiction.
Tokarczuk and Croft had already won the Booker Prize for Flights, while Grossman and Cohen had previously won for A Horse Walks Into a Bar.
