Each of Valve’s end-of-year wrap-ups lists a few games with their orders listed arbitrarily, making it difficult to tell which title was the best-selling or most-played in each category. Games in the Platinum tier rank first through 12th, with gold-tier games ranking 13th through 24th. Those in the silver tier are ranked 25 through 40, while games in the bronze tier are ranked 41 through 100. These lists are based on internal Valve data from January 1, 2022, to April 29, 2022.

The top-selling section of Steam’s best of 2022 list is the most crucial, since it informs gamers about the year’s most popular titles. In a random order supplied by Valve, the Platinum-tier 2022 Best Selling Games were:

Destiny 2 has topped the list for three years in a row, with 2019 being its first year on Steam after its departure from Blizzard’s Battle.net platform.

On the list, there are a few first-time winners as well. Battlefield 2042, New World, and Valheim are among the new games on the list. Apex Legends is particularly noteworthy since it is a non-2020 game that debuted on Steam late last year.
Another intriguing category is new releases, which highlights the year’s best 25 new games. The Platinum-tier Top New Releases for 2022, in random order from Valve:

In comparison to 2022, Valve also provided a breakdown of the months in which new releases were released. Last year, we had a good March and a solid September. May, September, and November 2022 were a little more erratic, with three significant months each featuring four or five entrants: May, September, and November.

Several of the 200K games from the previous year have also been relegated to lesser categories. Following its success last year, Destiny 2 and Among Us were relegated to the “100K” category in 2022. Terraria, a 200K game released in 2020, has been relegated to the 60K list. Another popular game in 2020, Monster Hunter: World, has dropped below the 30K mark. Both 200K games in 2020, Life is Strange 2 and Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, do not feature in the most-played games of 2022.
